It's a little Fishy!

This is my very first sketch using my IPad. I think it's a little different but it's like anything else. You have to keep working at it and get use to it. :) The IPad has a lot of neat applications for any artist.

It's 2012 now. So much to learn in the new year. So much to do and get done in the new year.

OK, we have had so much snow that snow is on my mind! I wish it did not feel so cold so I could go out and ice-skate. When I was younger that was one of my most favorite thing to do on a weekend. I don't think kids get out as much as they use to and should get out and do this more. :)

OK, I learned something new this week on why it's important to do thumbnails. I did a small thumbnail of this image and it gave me a better idea how I need to fill the space behind the duck and around the duck. This week I will be scanning in textures for Photoshop. I have a lot to try on my images so I'm excited.

I've been enjoying sketching chicks and I'm also using this time to work on digital watercolor. It's been interesting learning about all the different brushes and how to use them. It's amazing how you can make your own and the different effect you can get.

I was an artist picked for this award. Wow! This is so fun. :) Part of this is to post 7 things about me or my art and post it on my blog. Well, I'll give it a try..

1. I am a Freelance Children's Artist who loves all kinds of art. Yes, what artist does not admire other work? It's amazing how many wonderful artists are out there. They put in many hours into the work they put out for us all to enjoy. It's always a blessing to be part of that.

2. I work with watercolors using brushes of all kinds. Even digital watercolor has caught my attention over the past year or so.

3. Each image I work on tells a story I would like to add to the world.

4. I believe my ability to draw is a gift from up above.

5. I want to help others when needed.

6. I am thinking of how my stories will one day be on an E-Reader for children to read and see the little animation that will go with them as the E-Reader reads them my stories. :) That makes me smile. I should write down that goal. It's a great one to have.

7. I'm enjoying my life and my art.

I've been sketching more these days. I think sketching can be fun. You never know what you might come up with. :) I've been reading a few books on sketching as well and some of them talk about sketching what you see not what you think you see. Well, when you are working with Children's stories a lot of it is done with how I want it to look. Sometimes it's not perfect but that is how I wanted it to be. :)

The last day of 2010 at Marco Island Florida we found this star on the beach. Wow, what a site to see. As an artist I am taken back by the beauty of this. I've never seen one like this before and it's amazing. The sandy white beach was warm to your toes and a sight for all to see. Kids adore the sand and ocean.

Childhood flies by so fast and I think it's important to savour your family fun time with your kids. :) There is a game called CLR and we love playing it. I also love UNO. How many of us would love to have as much desert as we wanted? Kids love ice-cream and candy. I love working on images that show how excited kids get about things. The sweet taste of candy or cake can put a smile on any kids face. :)

Helped out at my daughters new school. The book fair is winding down and it was fun. I met a lot of neat people and enjoyed the kids. The new books that are out are great. I really miss working but I know my baby will grow fast. OK, he is not a baby anymore. More of a toddler, he really is into everything. He is fun. My hubby watched him while I went and volunteered up at the school. Before school they really had a rush of kids with books and money in hand. It was fun. I'm headed back up to the school to have lunch with my daughter. What a neat morning. :)

This is part of the image I've been working on. Sorry I can't post them all because some of my images have been taken off the Internet without my permission. It's really sad. Who would do that kind of thing? Well, most people just feel it's a right if it's on the web. It felt good to paint again. Now, I want to get some of my stories out and start working on them. That's my next goal for this week is to get one of them down all the way so I can tighten them up and start working on images for them. A few of the stories have all the image ideas down but I still have to tighten them up. Ha, so much for me to do already. :)

Saturday we went to visit some horses. It was a beautiful day out and I wanted to get out in the fresh air. They really are beautiful and big. I don't think people realize how large horses can get. They love to eat the hay but would not take the peppermint we tried to give them. It was a fun afternoon.

Maybe she is running from a ghost or a skunk. The other image is the sketch for the IF climbing. I think this is a neat image. I can see a kid doing this... Kids are funny that way and seem to get into all kinds of trouble. :)

I don't know if I'll get these painted by the end of the week. I kinda like them black and white too. My kids wanted copies to color them in.
These kids are out very late. When you stay out late the real monsters come out.
I can remember when I was little we use to be afraid to go to the huge yellow house on the corner. Every halloween we looked forward to it because the guy would decorate his yard and give huge candy bars to us kids.

This week I will work on a magazine cover and start an idea for a hidden picture. Later tonight I start typing up assignment five. I think I have it close to what I want. Took a lot longer than I wanted it too. I guess because it's really an outline of three possible writing ideas. It normally takes me a long time to write one. Since these all were 32 page book ideas I have had to break them down to outlines.

There is information all over the internet about children's writing. I've found one that I think is very helpful. It has message boards and e-letters. It's The Institute of Children's Literature. Jan sends out all kinds of emails that has lots of info for writers. It's free to join too. So far I've learned a lot from the classes. I think you pick up what you need when you take the classes and they help you figure out when your work is ready for print.

assignment critque

I got my assignment critique today. My teacher gave me a real good critique on my story. I will rework the story and use some of her suggestions.
I was a little surprised that my teacher did not know that a frog could live out of water. She also had never heard of frog races. I remember as a girl we would search out the largest frog I could find. Once we had a few frogs we would go out and have a race on the sidewalk. It was fun and the neighbor kids would gather to watch who would win. Some would even bet little items they had.

Assignment 5

I've started working on assignment five. I have to come up with three story ideas. Then search out publishers and figure out where I think my stories will fit. I think the hardest thing on this assignment is coming up with the three story ideas. I can come up with all kinds of little things but then they start to snow ball into bigger things and then I think they might not work. That is when I stop and start to think of other ideas. I'm writing them all down now and will pick a few of them and see what happens.

I finished editing my story. It took longer than I thought. Here is the beginning.

“It was you! You let him go,” Brandi said, pointing her bony finger in her sister’s face.
“I did not!” Erica shot back and swatted Brandi’s finger.

The class I'm taking has really helped me understand how to have a strong start. I look forward to applying what I've learned in my other stories.
My Grandma passed away last Monday. She was 94 years old and lived to see all of her great grandchildren. I've been working on a story that I would like to dedicate to her. She talked about when she was younger on a farm and gave me the idea. I have all the illustrations ideas down and the story just needs to be tightened up with what I've learned. My goal over the next year will be to get that finished up and find a home for it.

I've come up with several ideas for a logo. This is the one that is closest to what it needs to be because it's smaller. It's hard to put all the detail I would like. Books come to life for me.
Now that I've settled on this image it's time to get finished on my story. I took a story I had and added different characters and it's turned into a different story. That has made it somewhat a challenge this time around. I'm almost to the point of having it critiqued. I'm excited to get to work on my book. I think it will be done around the end of this year and we will find a publisher and I would like to see it signed with a publisher in 2009. Let us see if I can get to work on it.

Character building

Character building is not easy if you don't know who you are writing about. I found out that to write a good story it has to have characters that my readers want to get to know.
I did some surfing and I found some real good info on character building.

It's interesting because it talks about questions you can ask about your characters and it helps you get to know them. It has a list I found very helpful. The one that helped me the most was to ask another character like a sister or brother about your main character.
My story is going well and I will type it up later this week. This last story turned out to be for older kids but that's OK.

OK I've figured out that writing for older kids is not as easy as I thought. I've always worked on illustrations for younger children. This story I've been working on has taken me for a loop. I wanted to work with the character that my teacher liked in my last story. Well, with that one it was very easy to write and the assignment almost wrote it's own words. This one I might as well be pulling teeth. I'm not giving up just yet. I'm persistent and will keep at it even if it needs work over the next few years.
One of my main goals for taking this writing class was for me to learn more about writing. I've learned a lot and feel I will and can learn a lot more.
So, I'm off to write this little story up.
It's about these sisters and the youngest one wants to win this contest. It's got frogs in the story and the older sister can't stand them. Let's just say this brings in thorns into their already troubled relationship. I need to figure out what the girls will do next.

Red light monkey business

I am shocked that towns are getting away with messing with the timing of traffic lights. We have kids in the car and they were first put in place to aid in less accidents NOT to make money. I always try and think of how things will effect our kids. In one way or another it's important to think about our kids.

New writing class

I've started a new writing class and I'm really learning a lot. I'm enjoying all the stories that have crept up in my mind.
My goals for this week is to tighten up my story I'm working on now. I need more conflict in it.
Also, my teacher thinks I should work on making a story with my latest character that I wrote about. She is a teenage girl with lots of attitude and I can see her really getting into all kinds of trouble. I think most teens are like that. I never really thought about writing for older kids but I might give it a try sometime.
I did get my new books so I will be starting to read that this week too. I will be posting my thoughts about my stories on here as well.

When I started sketching this image it reminded me of a young girl I know. She had her glasses down on her nose, like an old school teacher. I remember thinking how I could see what she would look like at 80. This is how I feel about this sketch. Yes, she looks older. If you look closer you would be undecided if she was 13 or 83. I think it's the way you look at it too. One person might see it one way and you would see it another. Kinda interesting. :)

Once I took all my ideas for this image and put them together this is what I came up with. I like how the color turned out.
I'm happy with the world too. I was able to get a lot into this illustration without the feel of being too crowded.

I reworked this image on a different type of paper. I like the hot press paper more than I do the watercolor cold press. I am able to add more and more color to the image without having bumps in the paper. I think I will use this one for a postcard later....
I want to be at the beach all the time but I only get to go once a year.

Remember your friends! It's so important to remember your friends when time is so fast. Sometimes you need to grab your doll or bear and sit and have tea with your friends.

I painted this on cold press paper. I think I'm going to rework the image a little and then repaint it on a smooth board. I love to change things around and see what I can get.

I've been super busy around here. Here is an image I've been working on and I think it's almost ready for color. I also am trying out different paper than what I'm use to using. I'm going to look for 400 hot press paper. I hear it's smooth and I think watercolor would look great.

The total amount of time in jail was an hour.
I'm also working on a few other images of kids and teachers in jail for the school. They are having a carnival and you can pay to put others in jail. It's just for fun but what a great idea for kids to be able to put teachers in jail for giving them homework. :)

Valentine's Tag

I liked this image so much I wanted to redo it and add some fun things into the illustration. This will make a neat postcard to send to publishers. This also has lots of red in it because it's close to Valentine's Day and that always has a lot to do with what colors I use in my images. :) She is going to get him.

I'm to list six weird things about me. This is kinda hard to come up with six things to list that are strange or weird about yourself. I think I will give it a try and I must say tag is fun so this will be too. :)

1. I collect paper! I can't run out of paper ever. It would upset me if I ran low. I have to make sure I have stacks of paper so I know I will always have it when I want it. I like all kinds of paper from thick colored paper to think white paper that is calling my name to sketch on it.

2. I can't stand the smell of onions on someones breath. I think that might be because onions make me cry.

3. I will go out a buy lots of groceries but will leave the milk to my other half. I will not ever pick it up and I will do without if I run out. :)

4. I have collected tiny bouncers all my life. I have animals in some, glitter in some, and ones that are the shape of footballs. They bounce high, I love it.

5. I like to eat honey, it's yummy.

6. I like to bungee jump. It's wonderful.

Here is my Christmas card for this year. I've been cutting out the image and gluing it down onto the card. The image pops out when you open the card. I add glitter to each card. I will send this card out to publishers for Christmas.

I love birds, all kinds of birds. I love bird houses too. I think you can find all kinds and paint them very colorful. This was a great illustration to paint. I wanted to keep the fence white with little shading so I could make the bird houses really stand out.
